Remembering Coleman Looper

Rickman, TN (Nov. 20, 2019) — Singing News has learned that Rev. Coleman Looper, 80, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019.

A resident of Rickman, Tennessee, he was active in Gospel music for more than 62 years. During the 1960s and ’70s, he traveled with The Looper Trio, which he founded. Later, he formed the groups Coleman Looper and the Way Travelers (1970s-1990s) and then The Coleman Looper Family, which was active through 2018. He recorded more than 35 albums and even hosted his own television show, Coleman’s Sing Time. 

In addition to his music ministry, Rev. Looper was the founder and operator of the Grand Ole Gospel Barn in Crossville, Tennessee, for 24 years. Many groups performed there, among them The Isaacs, The Cookes, The McKameys, Jeff & Sheri Easter, The Hinsons, Primitive Quartet, The Spencers, Charles Johnson & the Revivers, The Paynes, Naomi Sego, The Rambos, and The Hoppers.

Rev. Looper was also a minister of the gospel and an evangelist for 63 years, and he co-founded and pastored two churches.

Rev. Looper is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie Hoover Looper, their two daughters and four sons (and spouses), 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, as well as other loved ones.

Funeral services were conducted Nov. 9 at Goff Funeral Home, followed by interment at Harris Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Looper’s family appreciates your prayers.
