Another Look At NQC - Friday Evening #2

More photos from the Friday edition of the 2004 National Quartet Convention!

We haven't figured out who this is yet, but we'll have to admit it's a quartet. Got some interesting hair pieces there!

I think the week is beginning to get to some people. Just think - Randy Miller was a normal human being when he was with the Kingsmen. He's been enjoying a fine solo ministry for the past few years and as you can tell, he's handling things just fine.

Another living legend, Dottie Rambo, is at this year's convention. She made a special guest appearance last night during the Fan Awards program.

The Southern Gospel Music Association is displaying the chairs that Howard and Vestal Goodman used on stage during the last few years of their lives.

That gentleman standing in the middle is Jeff Harper of The Harper Agency, one of Southern Gospel Music's leading talent agencies. Wonder which group is being talked about there?

Hey - we ran across a friend of ours from Boone! That's Howard Hayes of the Hayes Family going over the evening's schedule of events.

Another Look At NQC - Friday Evening

Friday has arrived - probably the biggest night of each year's National Quartet Convention. Here are some photos taken not long after the doors opened at 4:00pm. Hopefully, we'll be able to get more posted later this evening - it's kinda hectic here and all hands are needed on deck!

This has been a very popular stop, this year, especially since last evening. This is the booth of the Mixed Quartet Of The Year, the Perrys.

Here's Ernie and Lisa Haase at the Signature Sound booth. Hey, wait! Is that a long tie I see?

The folks at Crossroads Music (Horizon/Sonlite/Mountain Home) had a booth that attracted a lot of attention.

Stewart Varnado, pianist of the Dixie Echoes, visits with a fan.

Speaking of the Dixie Echoes, here's Stewart with Billy Todd, who is retiring from road life very soon.

We'll have more in just a little bit!

They Did It.

It's Friday morning. Very windy and rain is looming on the horizon. Nevertheless, there is much anticipation in the air as Southern Gospel Music fans from around the world anticipate two more evenings of their favorite music.

As you already know, last night featured the presentation of the Singing News Fan Awards. On the Singing News website, you'll find a complete list of all the winners and before too long, we'll have a lot of photos to share with you. Sorry it's taking so long to get them posted, but it'll be worth the wait.

And, while I'm apologizing, let go ahead and mention something about the lack of Danny's Diary yesterday. Just to be point blank honest about it, preparations for the Fan Awards consumed all of my time - but I don't think you'll mind when I tell you what was going on.

For the first time ever, the Singing News Fan Awards are going to be nationally broadcast. A tentative air date has been set for November 13 at 9:00pm eastern. Be watching for more details in the coming weeks.

Even though that's terribly exciting, it's still a lot of hard work to get it all together. Kim Ryan White, Phil Brower, Maurice, Jerry, the folks from the INSP Network and about thirty other people (including me) all had our hands full trying to get this program on tape and despite a few minor things here and there, it turned out pretty good. As I said, keep watching for details.

A thought about last night...
The biggest moment of all, no doubt, belonged to the Perrys, the 2004 Mixed Quartet of the Year. For a group that has worked so hard for so long, it was a moment that for many years seemed only a dream. But dreams have a way of coming true sometimes. Thousands upons thousands of Singing News subscribers cast their ballots this year and when it was all said and done, the Perrys had the most votes in this category.

The group had just sang their Top Ten-nominated song, "Calvary Answers For Me." To say the crowd responded with great applause would be the grossest understatement of the year. The group just blistered the place - and it took a while for the audience to calm back down.

Within about 15 minutes, though, the Perrys were back on stage to receive their Favorite Mixed Quartet award. Sheer electricity coming from the stands. I took a look around the auditorium as the group was coming to stage and even though I couldn't see everything, I did not see a single fan in their chair. Men, women and kids all over the building were on their feet applauding. And I don't mean polite applause - I mean thunderous. It was a moment that will forever be considered one of the all-time greatest moments in Southern Gospel history.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone quite as stunned as Tracy and Libbi Stuffle. As a matter of fact, it took the rest of the group quite a while to get Libbi out of her seat and headed to the stage. Buckets of tears were flowing. Fellow artists were on their feet cheering, high-fiving, shaking hands. Just pure emotion rang all the way up to the top of the auditorium.

But somewhere, up above the roof of the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center, there was someone else with a big smile on his face. P1. George Perry. Libbi's dad.

What a view he must have had from Heaven. Someone later said they could just imagine P1 sitting on the edge of a cloud, pointing at "his kids" and saying "I just knew it! I knew they could do it."

They did, George. They did.
