Comments, Comments #7

Now that everything is getting back to normal after our boxing match with Hurricane Frances, it's time to dip into the mail bag and see what you're saying. The response continues to astound me and I'm thankful that you log onto singingnews.com and click on Danny's Diary. Here are some of your thoughts...

I Wonder What They Think...
If you'll remember, I asked readers to submit a list of their favorite hymns. The votes have been counted and, in reverse order, here are what the readers of Danny's Diary say are their favorite classics of the church.

10) Great Is Thy Faithfulness
9) I Surrender All
8) At Calvary
7) When We All Get To Heaven
6) Leaning On The Everlasting Arms
5) Sweet Hour Of Prayer
4) How Great Thou Art
3) The Old Rugged Cross
2) Victory In Jesus
and, probably to no one's surprise...
1) Amazing Grace

Seventy four different hymns were suggested and if the truth was known, Numbers 7 & 6 were tied. Pretty impressive list no matter how you look at it.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...
In this post, I asked for the readers' opinion on who would win the Favorite Traditional Male Quartet Award and the Favorite Mixed Quartet Award in next week's Singing News Fan Awards. And they said...(I'm only going to use initials for these responses)...

"My guess for mixed group is the Crabb Family. My personal preference is the Perrys, though."
CM

"I predict the winner for Favorite Male Quartet will be Gold City (even though they are not my choice and I did not vote for them. My vote was for Brian Free & Assurance."
GL

"Mixed Quartet - McKameys, Male Quartet - Brian Free & Assurance"
NC

"Mixed Quartet - Perrys, Male Quartet - Dove Brothers"
DB

"Mixed Quartet - Isaacs, Male Quartet will be Dove Brothers or Legacy Five"
AW

"I think the winners will be Legacy Five in the Male Quartet category and the Perrys will be the Mixed Quartet."
JA

"My pick for Favorite Mixed Group is the Hoppers and I'd like to pick Brian Free & Assurance for Favorite Male Quartet - but it will probably be Gold City, which ain't bad either."
EH

"I believe that the Perrys will get the mixed quartet award."
CB

and here's the best comment I got....

"I really don't care who wins - these ten are the best on the road today no matter how you look at it!"
BN

(Winners will be announced Thursday, September 16, 2004 from the stage of the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY)

America Is Not Tolerant Enough...
I'm still getting mail on this one. In fact, of all the editions of Danny's Diary, this one has generated the most mail. Here are a few highlights...

"God Bless You for writing "America Is Not Tolerant Enough!" It is time we in America say enough is enough to our elected officials ( of all political persuasions) who shove their agendas down the throats of U. S. Citizens while throwing Godly principles and the very foundations upon which this nation were founded out the back door. Unless more of us speak out as you have, this country will continue its downhill slide and God will take away the blessings He has so abundantly bestowed upon this great nation."
Stan

"Very well said, Danny! I applaud you for having the courage to stand up and say what so many of us feel! I have always believed that those who aren't happy here should try living somewhere else!"
Sandy

"Amen & amen! Preach it, Danny! I loved it! Yes, America has faults BUT it's still the greatest country in the world & it's still where people are dying to get into. I don't think other countries can say that."
Elaine

"I whole heartedly agree with every word you stated in your column today......I think as a whole we need to really start taking 2 Chronicles 7:14 to heart and head....."If My People Which Are Called By My Name Will Humble Themselves And PRAY and Seek My Face.......I think we all know the rest of this verse.....I have spent the last 5 years of my life serving this wonderful country in The US Navy having been to the outermost parts of God's creation. And I hit my knees nightly and thank him for what he has done for me. We Need God In America Again."
Riley

"You are 100% correct. Thanks for putting what so many of us believe into such accurate and eloquent words."
Rob

"I can add nothing except a huge, hearty AMEN !!!!!!!"
Jim
(Speaking of "Amen," I'm not going to put up the 157 responses that said simply "AMEN!" - but know they're there!)

"You are definitely on target with this article!!!!!!!etc. It should be printed in every newspaper in the country! I would love to see it in The USA Today, as starters."
Mary

---------------------
Finally, let me throw in a couple of comments from posters who referred to a couple of "THE PERSON OF THE DAY" honorees.

Naomi Sego Reader
"I continue to enjoy your daily column and the news it brings. Being "out of the loop", your writings are my only source of keeping up with what's going on with all the groups and so many of the friends I have on the road. I just wanted to especially thank you for recognizing Ms. Naomi in your writing of September 6th. I simply can't say enough good things about this fine lady and the job that she continues to do for our Lord. People just need to be around her a bit to find out how genuine and real she really is. I personally do not feel like today's artist have shown her the respect and admiration that a person of her stature should be shown. Partly because they don't know about or don't comprehend the importance of her accomplishments throughout the past 45 years, and partly for reasons we'll never know. Your column yesterday goes a long way to let people know how special a lady she really is and personally, I am very grateful to you for the recognition that you gave her. Even though it was such a short time, I am also very grateful for the time I spent riding her bus and standing by her side each night."
Mark Stapleton

Billy Todd
"Upon hearing that Billy Todd would be retiring this month, I laughed and cried at the same time. I laughed because I am
so happy for him and I cried for myself that I will no longer be able to go across country far and wide to hear that wonderful
strong smooth bass voice. I have been listening to Billy sing my entire life and have enjoyed every single moment. I have known him since I was a small child and when he was a young boy singing with a local group, The Sylacauga Melody Boys in his home town of Sylacauga, Alabama. Billy is and will always be my very favorite gospel music singer and I thank my God that I have records, tapes, video and cd's that I can continue to listen to his rich voice. Billy has exemplified Christianity in all the years I have known him and has made a mark for Christ and Gospel Music. He has not only been a wonderful entertainer, but has never forgotten the fans. He is always there shaking hands, laughing, talking to the fans, and showing his true appreciation for the people who came to the singing. He has been a true example of what a Gospel Entertainer should be and has been a Great Christian Witness. Thank you for allowing me to congratulate Billy .
Laura Oliver

--------------------------
THE PERSON OF THE DAY

As you may have noticed, there have been no persons of the day for the past few days. With everything that's been going on, I felt it was more important to use the space to provide photographs of the Boone area.

However, now that things have calmed, let's get started once again. And, for today, there's only one obvious choice.

Tomorrow is September 11th.

Today's PERSON OF THE DAY is every victim who left this world from the World Trade Center in New York, the airplanes that struck the towers, the airplane that hit the Pentagon, the airplane that crashed in the Pennsylvania field and every rescue worker that gave their life trying to help them.

God Bless you all.
You will NOT be forgotten.
