Comments, Comments #6
It's that time once again - time to read your comments about what you're viewing on Danny's Diary. The e-mail keeps pouring in and I want you to know that I appreciate you taking time out of your day to read this blog. Hopefully, it keeps you entertained, provokes a few thoughts and maybe, just maybe, makes your day better.
Let's dive in....
George....
"Thanks for making George the person on the day. We were privileged to attend the concert in Akron. It was one AWESOME night. George was in rare form. He sang with SSQ for over an hour and probably would have sang more but the guys thought he had sung enough for one day."
Bailey
"I thought George would be one of your first persons of the day and I'm glad he was. As a child, I fell in love with George when he sang with the Blue Ridge Quartet. I watched them every week on the Gospel Singing Caravan with the Lefevres. I was probably 7 or 8 when I started watching them and I credit them with my deep love of southern gospel music and enjoyment of singing. These were my role models, my "idols" and I still love them today. Because of them, I have been blessed beyond measure, and have spent untold amounts of money on concert tickets, love offerings for groups in churches, products from albums, to videos, sheet music to songbooks, pictures of groups, t-shirts, books on various groups or artists, museum membership, Dollywood tickets for October, motel rooms for out of town concerts, and the list goes on. I have been so blessed and don't begrudge any of it.
"Because of my love for George, I began listening to the Cathedrals and followed them through the years. I learned to love Glenn like I loved George and then all the other members through the years. George has been an inspiration as I watched him with his many health problems and trials and how he would bounce back and be back out there singing usually before the doctors gave permission. One of the last times I saw George in Chattanooga, my husband took an old album cover of the Blue Ridge Quartet to have him sign. George had to go to the bus to rest after the concert so Ernie carried it to the bus to get George to sign. When Ernie brought it back, he said George cried when he saw it and said if I wasn't so old and tired, I would go out there and shake that guy's hand.
"And even now, George is doing a concert to help the hospital which has helped him so many times. That says so much about the kind of person George is, and of course, all his family is there to lend a hand as well. I love that family. Thank you so much for recognizing George."
Charlotte
If It's On The Internet, It Must Be True...
"I want to thank you for this much needed article. We are quick to judge people and as Christians we need to remember that He who is without sin cast the first stone. We have a tendency that if is written or spoken it is true May we pray more and talk less. Thank you for honoring Van Payne. She is a dear lady. Glen was so good to husband and made sure that when they were near our driving distance, Joe always had a front eat. He was legally blind, and LOVED the Cathedrals. He went to heaven after Glen and I know he is enjoying the music.God Bless you as you serve him. Thank you for the good work."
Geneva
"Hi, I'm from Pensacola, Florida. After reading your work today (I've just found you tonight) all I can say is that EVERYTHING you said was right on target. I have been with the Beulah Land Quartet for over eighteen years and The Royalaires Quartet for four and everything you wrote about, was the truth. From where to put your tables, respecting your bus driver, Bro James, Jake, Glen and to sing and write to your audience is nothing less than inspirational. Wow! Brother, you really hit it. Wake us up! Make us remember being too much corporate minded is nothing less than GREED! You are right we don't need another Statesmen or any of the other great groups. That was their calling and their mission. God is big enough to call each and every one of us to our own CALLING and MISSION."
Tom

THE PERSON OF THE DAY
Today's honoree is someone that many Southern Gospel Music fans will recognize almost immediately. He's Donald Watkins, the Manager of Transportation for the McKameys. In other words, he shuttles Ruben and the gang to all their dates.
Donald is also the brother of the Inspirations' tenor, Archie Watkins. But we'll forgive him for that. After all, he didn't have any choice in the matter.
Anyway, Donald's been driving up and down the highway for many years. In addition to his years driving for the McKameys, he spent many years behind the wheel of the Inspirations' bus. From what I hear from Ruben, Peg, Carol and Connie, Donald does a great job driving and taking care of their Prevost. Come to think of it, I can't recall any time I've ever seen the McKameys' bus look anything other than spotless (unless, of course, it was raining or snowing).
If you're ever around a venue when the McKameys arrive or depart, you'll see Donald carting product and equipment to and from the bus. Then, he'll usually head to his bunk to grab a few hours sleep so he can drive through the night to the next destination.
However, sometimes the schedule will permit Donald a few hours to spend visiting with friends and Southern Gospel Music fans. You can always count on Donald for a few good stories and great commentary about his view on life. And I can tell you one thing - you don't have to worry about Donald's stance on anything. He stands true to his convictions and he's not one to say something just because he thinks you'd want to hear it. He tells it like it is - and to be honest, we could use a few more people like that.
So, the next time you're around the McKameys and you happen to see Donald, tell him you appreciate what he does for the McKameys and Southern Gospel Music. The McKameys certainly appreciate him - and I do, too.
Donald Watkins
