How Do They Do It?
Have you ever stopped to think about the daily life of a typical Southern Gospel Music artist? I don't mean a day in the life on the road - I mean the day when they get home. Let's check in on this magical day....
The bus pulls in at 5:30 am. Grab the clothes out of the closet. Throw 'em in the car. Get back on the bus because your cell phone is still charging in the electrical outlet in your bunk.
Back to the car. Fumble with the keys, dropping them in the floorboard because you couldn't see the ignition switch. Still too sleepy to function.
Roll down the window. Ask the boss what time is the bus pulling out for the next trip.
Tomorrow. 9:00am.
Better hurry.
Drive home. Grab the mail out of the mailbox. Pull into the garage, try to miss the cat that's ready to pounce on your leg, trying to convince you that it's starving. Forget the fact that the cat eats better than you do most days.
Throw the dirty clothes into the laundry. Start the washing machine. Make a mental note to get the suit to the cleaners this morning and pray that they'll turn it around in less than a day's time.
Look through the mail. Throw away the junk mail - although you pause long enough to rip out the pizza coupons. Might come in handy later.
Check the messages on the answering machine. Mom's called - wants to know why you've not called her in two days. The doctor's office also called reminding you to come in for your annual physical. Too bad they called three days ago and the appointment was two days ago.
Look in the fridge for something for breakfast. Milk's out of date and there's something green on the shelf that might qualify for a nuclear investigation. Where did you put those pizza coupons?
Gotta make the car payment or else you'll be walking to the bus. It's due today. But wait - today's a Federal holiday, so the bank is not open. And it won't open until after you leave tomorrow.
Start writing credit card payments. House payment, too. But wait - you can't deposit the check you just got this morning. Remember? The bank is not open.
Gotta do something about your hay fever. Sang outside on a football field this past weekend. Bad sinus condition just won't leave you alone.
Why is the phone ringing at this hour? It's the boss. He's forgot about the photo shoot tomorrow morning. We'll have to leave tonight at six, he says.
Oh joy.
The grass needs cutting or else the neighbors are going to have the town condemn your property. Where is your little brother when you need him? Oh that's right - he graduated this past weekend from college in Virginia and you couldn't be there because you were singing in Texas.
Put the freshly washed clothes in the dryer.
Noon already!?!?!!
Makes you wonder, doesn't it? How many times did this take place this past Monday when your favorite group returned home from another weekend on the road? Chances are, the answer is many, many times.
It's not a lifestyle for the faint of heart. And, it's not what many people think - bright lights, around-the-clock applause, fame, riches and more.
Instead, it's a challenge. Ride a quartet bus for one month. See what you think then.
You'll see that it's a calling.

THE PERSON OF THE DAY
This hurts. This absolutely pains me. As a matter of fact, I'd rather have surgery with no body-numbing drugs than to have to do this. But I have no choice.
THE PERSON OF THE DAY is Michael Booth, tenor (well, I'd question that) of the Booth Brothers. I've known Michael a lot longer than I'd care to admit to and despite that, my sanity has managed to remain somewhat complete. However, I'm convinced that he is slowly chipping away at my mental capacity and will, one day, be the first one to come see me at the institution.
Well, he should be. He's the one who's going to cause me to be there.
Michael has no idea how fortunate he is. He married way beyond himself and saved Vicki (that's his poor wife) from a life of prosperity and comfort. His brother, Ronnie, has to go through life with the knowledge that he is related to Michael and there are way too many pictures that prove it. (To his credit, Ronnie DID try to get his parents to switch Michael for another baby at the hospital before Mr and Mrs Booth brought baby Michael home.)
I will say this, though. Michael has proven to be a good friend for many years. He's been there through thick and thin and I can truthfully say that his word is good.
Many of you who know me know that I am an only child. But I'll tell you this: if I could have had a brother, I'd want him to be just like...
Michael's brother Ronnie.
Michael Booth, showing off his summer figure. Kinda looks a like a chicken on a hunger strike if you ask me.
THE PERSON OF THE DAY for August 24, 2004.
