It Was Tony Greene's Fault
This week marks the Greenes' annual Gospel Singing Jubilee here in Boone, NC. Thousands of Southern Gospel Music fans have invaded Boone and the concerts are going very well.
Earlier this week, the autobiography of the Greenes, "Hold On," was released and many concert-goers attending the event have purchased the book and rapidly reading the book.
Now, I'm assuming they are reading it quickly because I've had several people ask me at the Singing News table, "Is it true?"
They're not meaning the book - they are referring to the now infamous, ill-fated trip I took to Columbus, OH, with the Greenes a few years ago.
Yes, it's true. Every word. Even every punctuation mark.
If you've not gotten your copy of "Hold On" yet, I encourage you to do so. In the meantime, here's that story...
But before I begin, let me just say one thing:
IT WAS TONY GREENE'S FAULT.
Tony promotes several concerts around the country each year. One of those events is an annual October sing in Columbus and in 1996, the date fell during a weekend Tony had chosen not to book any other engagements. Thus, he called my office and invited me to travel with them.
Everything went fine traveling to Columbus and with that evening's concert. After loading up and departing the auditorium, we did what every group does following a concert - look for a place to eat. We headed along the interstate and pulled into the first reputable restaurant we saw. We got off the bus and went into the restaurant. However, we discovered there would be an hour's wait. Not wanting to wait that long, we climbed back aboard the bus and headed off in search of another restaurant.
This scenario repeated itself about three times. Finally, we pulled into the parking lot of another restaurant and Tony, Tim and their dad Everette, head into it to eat. By this time, I've decided I could do with a light snack, so instead of going into the restaurant with them, I make up my mind to visit the little convenience store that's next door. Carolyn (Mom) Greene and Milena Parks (the Greenes' soprano at that time) are still on the bus as I start to get off of it so I call back to them, "I'm getting off the bus, don't let them leave without me." "Okay" comes the response.
Here's where things start going downhill. Even though Carolyn and Milena were still on the bus, they were in two different rooms on the bus at the time I left.
Well, I didn't know that.
They were discussing something and were having to use their voices loudly to hear each other in their respective rooms. By now, you've probably realized that the "Okay" I heard was one of the ladies' response to a comment the other had made.
So here I go, be-bopping off the bus and into the store. I'm in there all of three minutes, pick up my snacks, pay for them, walk out and head around the corner to where the bus is.
Or was.
Sure enough, the Greenes have left yet another restaurant. My first thought is thatTony has just moved the bus to make leaving the lot a little easier.
Nope.
So there I was: standing with my drink and chips in a parking lot in Columbus, OH, that looked a lot like those sights you see on programs like "Unsolved Mysteries" and "COPS." Even though I'm not overly concerned with my predicament (thank goodness I had my wallet with me, so I could have rented a car to get home), the drug deal (at least that's what it seemed to be) going down across the street gave me serious doubts about wanting to hang around to see if the Greenes realized I was not on the bus.
Right after we had left the auditorium, Tony remarked he needed to get fuel before they left town. So, remembering this, I decide to give the Ohio State Patrol a call to see if they can catch the bus at a nearby truck stop I guessed Tony would stop at. I walk over to a phone booth and not finding a directory to use get a non-emergency number, I call 911.
Before I go on, let me pause to remind you that Columbus, OH, is a big college football town. Columbus places college football on a pedestal just behind God. And this particular Saturday night, the home team had played their biggest rival.
And won.
You can imagine the celebrations that were going on. When you get a city that size, filled with crazed football fans who are celebrating with various quantities of liquid refreshments, police officers get lots of overtime.
I make my call and when an officer answers, I explain my situation. There's nothing but silence on his end. Then he asks me to hold. When he gets back on the line, I can barely hear him because of all the laughing that's going on in the background.
His exact words were, "Sir, forgive us for laughing. We've been chasing drunks and breaking up fights all night and this is a welcomed relief! We don't mean to laugh, but we're glad you called!"
I'm standing outside in the cold, three hundred miles from home and no way to get there, an unwilling witness to possible criminal activity and they're glad I called! What a ministry!
To make a long story short, I had to explain the situation to what seemed to be five or six different patrolmen. And you know, all of those 911 calls are tape-recorded. I just hope it doesn't show up on "COPS" someday.
Meanwhile on the Greenes's bus, Tony is still heading East, about 10 minutes from the truck stop. Carolyn comes up to the driver's area and they start talking. Tony asks his mom to go to his room and get his jacket (to use when he fuels the bus). She opens the door to his room and...
"WEEEEEEE LLLLLEEEEFFFFFTTTTT DAAAAANNNY!!"
I found out later Tony had thought I had turned in for the night (I was using the spare bunk in Tony's room) while we were parked at the restaurant. Anyway, he goes on to the truck stop, fuels and heads back to the restaurant.
At least he was in a hurry, right?
Back at the phone booth, I'm still on the phone with the state patrol, "ministering" to them. I can safely say, though, one of the prettiest sights I've seen in my 16+ years of Southern Gospel Music is that of the Greenes' bus topping the hill, coming toward the phone booth.
Tony pulls up, opens the door, looks at me and says, "I guess I can forget about a cover, huh?"
