As all of us who work behind the scenes in Southern Gospel Music know, this industry must exercise good business practices to survive. As a result, sometimes we get caught up in the bottom-line numbers or trying to stay ahead of the competition and we overlook the efforts of some people who lay aside business to use their talents to make someone else's load a little bit lighter.

For the past several years, many of the artists in Southern Gospel Music have donated their time and talent to support the Galilean Children's Home (in Liberty, KY) and the Send-A-Kid-To-Kamp Radiothon (Lexington, KY). For those of you who might be unfamiliar with these two organizations, let me briefly relate to you the incredible work that goes on, usually un-noticed by anyone.

The Galilean Children's Home is a ministry to which Jerry and Sandy Tucker have completely devoted their lives. Located in a quiet rural area, the Galilean Children's Home (actually several buildings) showers Christian love on children numbering almost 100. The Tuckers and their staff of about 60 people (some are full-time employees, some are part-time and some are volunteers) set about the daily task of educating and providing the mere existence of kids ranging from newborn to post-high school age. Though some children are from the surrounding neighborhoods and attend the just school facility (the school is rated among the Top 10% Christian schools in the world), most of the kids at the Home are those who have suffered great misfortune in a cruel world. Children who have been abandoned, children who have been abused, poverty-stricken children, and severely physically and/or mentally handicapped children are all welcomed at the Galilean Children's Home. Another important part of the Tucker's ministry is their latest effort - a facility for the babies of unwed or imprisoned mothers.

Regardless of their age or condition, the children who attend the Home are given the tools to get through life: a solid education and more importantly, Christian guidance. Just hearing the testimonies of these kids will blow you away as they relate how their lives have been changed forever. Just watching the Home's staff lovingly care for these kids will touch the heart. And, if you think you're doing something really big for God, just a few minutes at the Home will knock you down a few notches.

Naturally, something of the Home's magnitude requires a large operating budget. With a monthly budget well over the $100,000 mark, one might think the Home has guaranteed income from various sources. Think again. Like many ministries, the Home operates month-to-month by faith. Many Southern Gospel Music people, both artists and industry, have worked to help the Galilean Children's Home. For example, Jeff & Sheri Easter have been key players in helping to raise funds for the Home. Noted Christian entertainer Charlie Daniels also lends his support. Many other artists have played a role in meeting the Home's budget, some by performances, others by quietly sending a monthly check. Jerry Kirksey, Editor-N-Chief of SINGING NEWS, serves on the Home's Board of Directors and has lent his time to assisting in various capacities for the Home. All of these people who I've just named will protest any recognition for their efforts, but isn't great to see Southern Gospel Music working in a manner that would be pleasing to God?

The Send-A-Kid-To-Kamp (SKTK) Radiothon was started almost 20 years ago by Lexington, KY's WCGW, AM 770. What began as a parking lot singing by a handful of local groups has now grown to be one of a super one-day event in Southern Gospel Music. To make a long story short, the entire concept behind SKTK is raising funds to send underprivileged children of central Kentucky to the church camp of their particular denomination. Since it's origin, SKTK has raised over $300,000 and sent over 3000 kids to church camp - and every dime has been raised through the efforts of Southern Gospel Music artists. Over 100 artists have appeared on the SKTK stage during the past decades. Through the efforts and caring hearts of these people and many of their contemporaries, many of the kids who attended church camp received Christ as their personal Savior and have become great workers for the Lord. To give you an example of the success of SKTK, there are several church pastors and youth ministers - who would have most likely never attended church camp and learned about Jesus if it had not been for SKTK and it's Southern Gospel Music friends - who now have great ministries in Kentucky. There are several other examples of how Southern Gospel Music and it's people supporting great causes. Some we'll learn about, most will be only known to the cause and God. Whether or not it is public knowledge matters not - it is the kindess of a servant's heart that causes excitment in Heaven. So, despite what some people might think, there's still ministry in Southern Gospel Music.

Amen.
