Duct Tape, Please (#472)

Monday, January 04, 2010
It was Karen Peck Gooch of New River who told me about four weeks ago that it "sure seems like the Southern Gospel world has been quiet lately."

I should have seen it coming.

For example, now we have unusable Gold City photos. Dove Brothers photos? Scrap 'em. Mark Trammell just caused us to have to ditch a pile of photos. Ryan Seaton's departure from Ernie Haase & Signature Sound has rendered the Sig Sound file useless.

'Course that was a double whammy: The Karen Peck & New River photos are going to the recycle bin, too.

Gee, thanks, Karen.

Changes are nothing new to Southern Gospel music. In fact, we've grown accustomed to them. And, many regular readers know my story of how "brilliant" we at Singing News were when we decided to shoot a whole year's worth of covers while we were at the National Quartet Convention—and wound up using only three because of personnel changes.

So I guess change will always be inevitable. It won't surprise me if there are other changes later this year:

With that in mind, here are my Top 5 predictions for the remaining days of 2010:

1.) Ivan Parker will announce that he will become a one-man quartet.

2.) The Booth Brothers will announce that Michael will retire to become a regular on Sesame Street.

3.) The Primitive Quartet will start using soundtracks.

4.) Bob Brumley will decide that there are simply too many people attending the annual Brumley Sing in Lebanon, Mo., and he will move it to a gas station parking lot in the Sahara Desert.

5.) Aaron Wilburn will challenge Mike Tyson to a 15-round-winner-take-all boxing match.

In reality, we know No. 3 will never happen; Ivan enjoys his solo status and he would be nuts to split his flat amongst three more singers; and Bob Brumley's got a great thing going and we all know it.

As for Michael, Sesame Street might be the perfect place for him, but I don't think Ernie and Burt want a trio on their show. And Aaron? He doesn't have the ears to spare.

But I can give you one prediction that will come true:

I'm telling Karen to keep quiet!
