Southern Gospel-Chicago Style (#465)

Monday, November 16, 2009
A couple of weeks ago, I offered congratulations to Gerald Sweatman who celebrating his 40th anniversary as member of the Southern Gospel music community. As I was reflecting on his achievements, I couldn't help but think of some of people who help keep Southern Gospel going.

For example, I give you Sharon Baker and Nan Rich of Wood Dale, Illinois. You wouldn't normally think of the Chicago area being a "happening" spot for Southern Gospel music—and most people didn't until Sharon and Nan were inspired to promote after attending the 2000 National Quartet Convention.

Together, these two zany ladies (said with all respect and admiration) formed Fishnet Promotions and in March of 2001, they hosted Greater Vision for their first event. Since then, they've brought in some of Southern Gospel music most elite names—quite an undertaking considering the fact that they have to rely heavily on word-of-mouth and self-built mailing list advertising.

A few years ago, I attended one of their events and I will have to say it was a first-class production. Not only did they go out of their way to make it a special evening for the artists, they made sure that each and every ticket buyer knew they were appreciated—not just a warm body in a seat.

On Sharon and Nan's website (fishnetpromo.com) you'll find this: "We believe these concerts can be a powerful tool in your hand to make a difference in someone else's life." With an attitude like that, its no wonder God has sustained these two ladies with successful events. So, if you are in that Chicagoland area and love Southern Gospel music make sure you support the Fishnet Promotions events.
