The Blink of An Eye (#435)
We're all hanging here by a thread. I think I've written that a time or two here in Danny's Diary, but the truth in the statement never goes away.
Let
me give you an example. This past Sunday afternoon, my family and I
were taking a drive through the country and there were two vehicles
(one of which was a motorcycle) in front of us as we entered into a
series of "S" curves. In the middle of one of those curves was an
intersection. As we neared the intersection, a vehicle coming from the
crossing road pulled up to the stop sign and then suddenly pulled out
into the middle of the road we were traveling on...
Just as the motorcycle got to that intersection.
The
motorcycle plowed into the side of the little SUV, causing the rider to
slam violently headfirst into the SUV's rear fender. Though it seemed
like slow motion, it only took seconds for that whole episode to play
out.
When you stop to consider it, it doesn't take long to
realize that that's how close we all are to eternity. In a split second
between now and then, life ceases in one world and begins in another.
That's
why knowing where you spend eternity is especially important. We've all
known plenty of people who've "put off" making their decision for
Christ and then wondered if they got everything straightened out in
their lives' waning moments.
I wonder what was going through
that motorcyclist's mind in that last second before impact...Did he
think about those times Christ had knocked on his heart's door? Did he
know that all of his chances were finally gone?
Sobering, isn't it?
Fortunately
for this particular rider, he'll have the opportunity to consider those
questions this side of Heaven. By the time emergency personnel arrived,
he was alert and didn't appear to have suffered any broken limbs.
Naturally, because of the nature of the accident and the impact, EMTs
were concerned about possible head injuries and used a life-flight to
quickly get him to expert medical attention.
But for many others, they'll never get another opportunity.
Don't be one of those who've lost all their chances. It can all be over in the blink of an eye.
