What About Monday? (#307)

Thursday, June 08, 2006

Today, I was talking with a promoter friend of mine and he brought up an interesting point: in the past, many concerts were held on Sunday afternoon or a week night other than Thursday or Friday. I remember several of those myself. We'd arrive at the venue around 7:00 p.m. and hear about two hours of singing. Usually, there were just two - maybe every now and then, three - groups on the program.

My friend then went on to say that he felt Southern Gospel, as a whole, was going to have to take a long hard look at the current concert structure as there are more and more things to occupy the typical concert nights - churches are having more Friday/Saturday activities, school functions have increased and so on. Sooo...

This promoter was thinking seriously about trying a concert, with just one or two major artists, on a night that was not considered "standard." But before he jumped off the diving board, he wanted to get input from potential ticket buyers. Thus, today's diary entry.

Would YOU consider attending a paid-admission concert of only two major artists if it was held on a Monday or Tuesday night - especially if you knew the concert would not exceed two hours?

Give it some thought and e-mail me your response. Who knows, we might be able to help out a few groups with some more dates!

Southern Gospel Music has always been a friend to fund raising. Plenty of concerts have been arranged on behalf of some deserving individual or organization and this weekend, June 9-10, there is such an event planned for Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Several of Southern Gospel's leading artists will gather at the Wilkesboro Raceway Park to help raise funds for the Ebenezer Children's Home. Make sure you visit the Concert Billboards on the Singing News website or look in the recent printed versions of Singing News.
