One Year Ago

I've received many comments on my "changes" editorial that appeared in the February issue of Singing News. Most of the comments ranged from "it's been that long?" to "that seems just like yesterday." One person even made the suggestion that I take a Singing News from 1996 and do a changes list from that point forward.

There's only 24 hours in a day.

But here's what I will do. I've picked up the February 2005 issue of Singing News. Let's map a few changes (in order of appearance in that issue).

1. David Robinson is no longer the tenor of the Dixie Echoes. Dallas Rogers has filled that vacancy.

2. Tony Peace sang baritone for the Palmetto State Quartet. He's now the baritone and emcee for the Kingsmen.

3. Mike Franklin was the baritone for the Melody Boys. He's now a soloist.

4. Ditto for Tim Surrett, formerly of the Kingsmen.

5. Mike Presnell (remember him from Perfect Heart?) was singing bass for Safe Harbor. I'm not sure what he's doing now.

6. Jodi Hosterman was the tenor for the Kingdom Heirs. Billy Hodges now sings in that quartet.

7. Randall Hunley was the pianist for the McKameys. The 2005 NQC was his last performance with the group.

8. Andrew Smith was the pianist of the Dove Brothers. Jerry Kelso now tickles the ivories for that quartet.

9. Josh Simpson was the pianist of the Hoppers. He now plays for Gold City.

10. Joseph Smith sang lead for the Mark Trammell Trio. Dustin Sweatman, formerly of the Dixie Melody Boys, is moving into that position.

11. Chris West was the bass singer for Mercy's Mark Quartet. The group is currently performing as a trio.

12. Ronnie Page and Melissa Kemper were part of the Chuck Wagon Gang. They're both off the road now.

13. Jeff Pearles and Robbie Hiner were with the Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet. Jeff is now with the King's Heralds Quartet, Robbie's working with Song Garden Music and Tony Jarman (from Poet Voices and Legacy Five days) is singing tenor for the Ole Time Gospel Hour Quartet.

14. The Wilburns were Jackie and Elaine, Gary Casto, Josh Singletary and Michael Helwig. Jackie and Elaine have just about retired, Gary and Josh are with the Monument Quartet and Michael is with the Stamps Quartet.

15. Tim Riley has come off the road with the rare exception of a guest appearance every now and then.

16. Greg Bentley is no longer the tenor singer in Squire Parson's trio.

Hmmm...maybe there is something to being a soloist!
