NQC Observations, Part 5 (#370)

Saturday, September 15, 2007

As I write this, the final night of the NQC 2007 has just gotten underway with the opening of the exhibit hall. Just over my right shoulder, you'll find the booths of the Hoppers and just on the other side of them, you'll find the booth of the Florida Boys.

Tonight marks the final appearance of the Florida Boys we've all grown to love and appreciate it. They've been doing a fair booming business as many people are taking this last opportunity to buy Florida Boys recordings from one of the legends (Les, Glen and Derrell). Naturally, Derrell has already told me that if he knew that retirement would have boosted their sales like they've been this week, they would have retired a long time ago!

Nonetheless, it's a bittersweet time as these guys say farewell. But you know what? They've more than earned the right to go out in style and anything that might be offered as accolades is certainly appropriate.

Directly in front of me, the sales team of Singing News is hopping as many fans are renewing their subscriptions, not to mention the many new subscribers that have signed up this week. And, let me take this opportunity to thank all of those who have talked to me this week, commenting on how much they love the magazine.

Elsewhere in the exhibit hall, it's a busy time for the artists, too. I've not heard sales figures this week, but most artists seem to be pleased.

This morning, I was part of the Southern Gospel Promoters' Association riverboat breakfast cruise (guys, did y'all ever hear about a dinner cruise? Hint...Hint...) After some good singing and a trip up and down the river, I gave the closing prayer. And as I close this diary entry, there's one thought I'd like use again:

All of us in Southern Gospel music are charged with a mission. Though we all often use humor as a vehicle in what we do, this is serious stuff. Earlier today, I could not help but think that every single one of us are in some way responsible for every person who is attending the NQC this week. No, I don't mean that "X" group brought "Y" number of fans or "A"'s ad is responsible for "B" selling hundreds of CDs.

Instead, this is our chance to show what Christ has done in our lives. It's an opportunity to be an open bible. It's a time that the greatest story ever told can be presented through song. If Christ is truly in our lives, let Him show so that others will want we have.

The mission does not end when the NQC closes shop tonight.

In fact, a new chapter will begin.
