More Sounds Of The Seasons

Thursday, November 03, 2005

Today, we continue taking a look at some of Southern Gospel artists' favorite Christmas songs and recordings. I don't know about where you live, but yesterday, I did hear the season's first Christmas song being played on one of our local stations.

Did seem like Christmas in Florida, though: Here in Boone, it was around 60 degrees, bright and full of sunshine. And they were playing "Winter Wonderland."

Michael Booth (Booth Brothers) - Oh Holy Night. When you think about the images of Jesus being born in a manger sitting in a barn, I think sometimes we forget that He left perfection to come to us. I also like the very first Christmas project by the Oak Ridge Boys.

Jim Brady (Booth Brothers) - The Carpenters' Christmas project. It was a part of my childhood, as my older brothers and sisters played this, and it became my favorite.

Stuart Cary (Down East Boys) - Oh Holy Night. The message of the Christmas story is contained in this song. It was the Holiest night ever - what more can be said?

Brian Free (Brian Free & Assurance) - White Christmas. I'm a kid at heart. I love snow, and I can only remember it snowing in Georgia on Christmas day four or five times in my lifetime. I also love the Carpenters' Christmas album.

Ricky Carden (Down East Boys) - Oh Holy Night and Harry Connick, Jr's Christmas recording.

Trecia Cisneros (Lesters) - Oh Holy Night and the Celine Dion Christmas project, These Are The Special Times.

Ronnie Bright (Down East Boys) - Silent Night, Christmas by the group Accapella.

Sharon Kinsey (Singing News) - The Hallmark Christmas CD by James Taylor, especially "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" sung by James Taylor and Natalie Cole. Superb!

Derrick Selph (Brian Free & Assurance) - Gold City's older Christmas recording with Brian Free on it.

Josh Singletary (Monument Quartet) - All of them! I love Christmas music. It's a part of the definition of "Christmas" to me. It's hard to pick one. If I had to choose a favorite, I'd say something very descriptive that puts a picture of Christmas in my mind like "Sleigh Ride" or "Christmas Waltz."

Bill Shivers (Brian Free & Assurance) - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole, ---- and anything by the Chipmunks!
