Here are the Top Ten Greatest Southern Gospel Songs Of All Time (according to the readers of Danny's Diary). I've also included the number of total votes each song got.
1) The Midnight Cry (1007)
2) The Lighthouse (993)
3) We Shall See Jesus (884)
4) Who Am I (512)
5) Sweet Beulah Land (483)
6) Because He Lives (372)
7) God Walks The Dark Hills (359)
8) He Touched Me (231)
9) Jesus Is Coming Soon (181)
10) The Old Ship Of Zion (178)
I won't go into any deep commentary on how this turned out. However, I will make a couple of quick observations.
a) I was somewhat surprised that even though several "newer" songs made the overall list, they didn't make the Top Ten (although "Please Forgive Me" was Number 11 with 144 votes).
b) The first three songs easily surpassed all the others - but "Midnight Cry" and "The Lighthouse" were in a nail-biter until the very end. After we got past the first 20 or so songs, the votes dwindled down to an average of about 80-90 per title.
All of this information will be passed along and will be considered as the record company begins their work on their project. We'll see how many of these songs make the final cut - I know they are getting information from several other sources and are planning on a mid-2006 release. We'll see how it goes!
