Boarding directions are heard over a loudspeaker in the background. A heavy engine rumbles into the station. Adam Crabb’s harmonica calls “shotgun” on the front seat as the brakes release and we start to roll down the title track. Crabb Revival is on a Runaway Train.
“The Journey” should bring back memories of “Through The Fire” with Terah Penhollow, Zack Smith, and Adam trading vocal lines. A lone acoustic guitar sets the stage for “Rescue Me,” a plea to God for deliverance from life’s trials. Individuals whose actions impacted the world…Rosa Parks, Anne Frank, and Jesus Christ…are the inspiration for “The Power Of One.” Acoustic guitars return to set up the light pop inspired “Best Friends.”
“Both Sides Of The River” has a Delta blues setting, hinting at a full steam energy level that never quite develops. Were you expecting a “girl/boy band” sound? “Smiling Down On Me” applies quirky audio effects with mixed results. Acoustic guitars return once again for “You Amaze Me,” a fine praise lyric that Crabb Revival delivers with enthusiasm.
Runaway Train has three more tracks to cross before reaching its destination in record time. The best is saved for last. “Carry On” is a strong contender if you prefer a driving style. For contrast, the vulnerable lyric of “Only A Man” is set over an introspective piano and organ. This should be the most compelling cut for many fans. “Ornament Of Grace” launches with acoustic guitar for the first lines until a fuller instrumental backing takes over.
Crabb Revival’s inaugural locomotion venture has strong lyrics, good vocals, and a talented band of players. They reflect their family traditions but like a fast train, they aren’t afraid to jump the track at times to see where else they may land.
